The ‘thirty-seven factors of enlightenment’ concern the stages of mental development designed to free the mind from suffering and its causes – starting with a deluded mind, all the way to attaining perfect enlightenment. They are taught in classical Buddhist Sutras, both in the Theravada and Mahayana. They are listed in seven groups:
- Four types of mindfulness
- Four efforts
- Four legs of miracles
- Five powers,
- Five strengths
- Seven limbs of enlightenment; and
- the Noble eightfold path.
At the requested of a member, during this term, Rinpoche has agreed to teach on these important topics in great depth based on a hitherto unknown Mahayana Sutra that is oddly entitled as 'miscellaneous' (sna tshogs) in Tengyur. This is a free event, but any generous friends are encouraged to become benefactors by sending your donation so that all can attend these classes without any constraint.
On December 21, Lama Choedak Rinpoche presented a paper on this subject at the International Sangha Forum in Bodh Gaya. HH Dalai Lama presided over the event, which drew 2000 Sanga members from 35 different nations.
