Meditation Retreat
with Lama Choedak Rinpoche (more)
|
Sickness is a common suffering of all living beings. However, according to Tibetan medicine, most illnesses are psychosomatic. Ill health that is generated by one's unwholesome attitude cannot be cured by conventional medicine alone.
This two day healing retreat will help you understand how certain mind states can contribute to ill health, and to learn how to apply the appropriate antidotes. Discover the connection between thoughts, behaviour and speech, and the positive and negative effects they have on your health!
At this retreat Lama Choedak Rinpoche will impart the transmission of Healing Buddha's meditation and mantra passed down through an unbroken lineage since the time of the Buddha. There will be several sessions where you will learn how to do the Healing Buddha's meditation. You will also learn how to use it to assist friends and relatives who may be ill or dying.
This profound meditation technique will compliment any form of medical treatment. It can reduce the side effects and increase the effectiveness of any medication. It is especially recommended for health professionals and those who are interested in learning self-healing.

Meditation Retreat
with Lama Choedak Rinpoche (more)

As part of the Six Week Bodhicitta Retreat to be held at SIBA, Lama Choedak Rinpoche will be giving an initial three days of teachings and empowerments on the preliminary practices of ngondro.
Ngondro is undertaken as skilful means for purification of gross negative karma and the accumulation of merit, without which the accumulation of wisdom, emphasised in the Vajrayana path, will not be accomplished.
This weekend will include comprehensive teachings and practical sessions on refuge and prostrations, generation of bodhicitta, Vajrasattva mantra recitation, mandala offering and guru yoga.
Those students wishing to develop their meditation practice will benefit greatly from the profound Ngondro instructions.

Nyung-ne
Retreat
with Dungyud Tulku Rinpoche
|
Friday 19th to
Monday 22nd September 2008
|
|

|
(Meditation on
One-thousand Armed Avalokiteshvara)
with Dungyud Tulku Rinpoche (more)
|
The practice of Nyung-ne is a fundamental traditional Buddhist practice that combines discipline and meditation to help us purify our negativities and develp wise compassion. In the Buddhist context, compassion is a positive reponse based on a deep understanding of suffering and the causes of suffering.
Nyung-ne traces its origin to an Indian Buddhist nun known as Gelong-ma Palmo who lived in the 10th century who is said to have cured leprosy through the practice and attained enlightenment. It is a living tradition practiced in all Tibetan lineages.
Nyung-ne is a Drub Choe (complete ritual) which revolves around taking of the Five Precepts, the Buddhist skilful means of generating mindfulness, restoring vows and positive deeds and purifying negative deeds and obscurations. The basic aim of the practice is to purify negative karma by abstaining from the 1) killing, 2) stealing, 3) sexual activity, 4) tellling lies, 5) drinking or taking any intoxicants. In addition to these five, one also abstains from 6) eating meat and eating after midday, 7) singing, dancing, playing music, wearing perfumes and 8) sitting on high seats. Noble silence is observed even though it is not one of the precepts. Of particular note, complete fasting is observed including not consuming food or fluids for a total of 40 hours during each two day Nyung-ne ritual.
Nyung-ne skilfully combines devotional practices with the Eight Precepts accentuating the effective restoration of wholesome qualities and purification of unwholesome deeds. Each day is made up of twelve or more hours of devotional practices of prostrations, meditation and chanting of Dharanis of Avalokiteshvara as well as the Blessed Praises to the Qualities of Avalokiteshvara by Gelongma Palmo.
This Nyung-ne will be the first held at SIBA. Dungyud Tulku Rinpoche, of Spiritual Head of Sakya Tharpa Ling will perform the initiation of 1,000 Armed Avalokitesvara on friday night and will provide teachings as well as leading the sessions.

12th Annual
10-day Calm Abiding Meditation Retreat

Meditation has a proven record in its ability to improve health, awaken happiness, open our hearts and give a clear perspective on life. We can quickly overcome discontent, stress and anxiety - learning to take care of ourselves and others, sharing and living mindfully.
SIBA is a peaceful and secluded environment allowing us to withdraw from “life’s busyness” and experience something different and profound. Retreats are a unique opportunity for us to develop new positive habits and revitalise ourselves.
To learn to meditate we need a qualified teacher and a well-defined path. All SIBA’s retreats are carefully structured with practical meditation sessions supported by comprehensive and accessible teachings directly from the “warm breath” of our teacher. This ensures that both beginners and advanced students are able to apply themselves at their own pace.
The space and freedom and freedom that comes from nurturing a good heart is what SIBA’s retreats are about.
This is the most popular retreat of the year and give practitioners ten days to consolidate their daily practice of Calm Abiding meditation. An excellent follow up for those who completed an 8-week meditation course with Rinpoche's students. And if you have not done much or any mediation before you will come away equipped with the instructions and experience.
Special Teaching on Kamalashila's Stages of Meditation II -
When Buddhism spreads to a new country it is always associated with some controversies regarding the approach used by various teachers.
During the first 150 years since Buddhism was introduced in Tibet, there was considerable conflict between two approaches of meditation, sudden and gradual. Kamalashila is a famous Indian monk who was invited to Tibet by King Trisong Deutsen to challenge a Chinese Hvashang Mohoyen who propagated sudden and non thought doctrine. It is said that Kamalashila who emphasises gradual path to enlightenment won the famous debate in Samye in 842 AD. Subsequently, at the request of the Tibetan king, Kamalashila wrote three works on the Stages of Meditation.
Last year Nalendra monastery in Tibet offered Lama Choedak Rinpoche a Collected Works of Rongton Sheja Kunrig in which there is a huge commentary on Kamalashila's Bhavanakrama I, II and III. In this term Rinpoche will teach strictly on the basis of Rongton's commentary on Bhavanakrama II which he is currently translating . This will especially be of great interest for students of Calm Abiding meditation and Vipassana meditation.
This year in Sydney His Holiness the Dalai Lama gave five days of teachings on this Kamalshila's famous text. This retreat will offer an excellent opportunity for revision of these teachings.

Family Retreat
A summer holiday
with a Buddhist Veiw
for young people
and their families
|
The beautiful retreat centre of SIBA, set in the Snowy River Country bush of East Gippsland, Victoria is perfect for summer renewal with the family in a Buddhist community that is founded on a spirit of harmony and generosity.
On this retreat we learn about taking care of ourselves and others, sharing, offering and living mindfully. Relax and enjoy yourself in the space and freedom. Helping out around the place, in the garden, with meals, is part of the spirit of community.
A varied programme will suit young and old. There will be traditional Buddhist teachings on the Art of Meditation and its accompanying philosophy as well as fun projects such as prayer flag, mani stone and statue craft.
The compassionate teachings of the Buddha do not require a commitment to any beliefs other than the philosophy of kindness and respect. The family happiness that comes from nurturing a good heart is the aim of this holiday.

20th Annual
White Tara
Meditation Retreat
with Lama Choedak Rinpoche (more)
|
White Tara is a beautiful meditation for developing kindness and compassion, increasing spiritual vitality and overcoming fears. She represents the feminine energy of the Buddhas. She is said to have originated from the tears of the deity Avalokiteshvara, when he wept about the extent and intensity of the suffering experienced by all beings.
All basic Buddhist meditation techniques are included in the practice, with special emphasis placed on the creative visualisation meditations of Vajrayana Buddhism. The practice and teachings of White Tara will be valuable in everyday life and can help bring greater clarity, calm and inner-joy.
The Annual White Tara meditation retreat provides an opportunity for new students to receive the empowerment and learn the practice, and for experienced students to progress.
Students who receive the empowerment and undertake the practice of White Tara will increase their spiritual vitality, intensify their capacity for compassion, and overcome fears, including the fear of death.
Note: Her Eminence Jetsun Kusho'la was scheduled do preside over this retreat but has unfortunately announced that this will not be possible now. However she has promised to be here for 21st Annual White Tara in January 2009.
