25 February

Well things are hotting up, His Holiness Sakya Trizin, His Eminence Ratna Vajra Rinpoche and Lama Lekshey and host of others arrived yesterday with all the wonderful and colourful array of banners, drums, horns and cybals as well as the usual Tibetan crush to see the holy ones.

Yet another stage in the development of this mandala of events and with each stage you realise that you were quite attached to things staying the way they were.  Yesterday signalled that the stupa construction in the garden is more than just a structure. It will be the final resting place before dissolution, although at the rate His Eminence is shrinking who knows!

Anyway this morning we were able to offer khatas to His Holiness and entourage which was wonderful and so lots of blessings flowing home to all of you.

Yesterday my grandma died (103yrs) and although she had a long life it made me realise that without a life in the Dharma it is just a long life.  Imagine what His Eminence could have done with that long life to benefit sentient beings!  Can you say some prayers for her please.

Love to all
Ani Rinchen

15 February

Yesterday we had the most amazing thunderstorms, rain and lightning and then just before the afternoon session it snowed for about 15 mins. We all rushed out to see, looked like beautiful white flowers falling from the sky. Hasn't been snow here for over 60 years and maybe longer. More blessings. After the last session you could see all the snow covered mountains which are usually hidden by all the smog over Kathmandu, so beautiful.

The Latest News from Nepal

Six of us returned from our blessed journey to pay our respects to His Eminences holy body and to be in His holy presence.

His Eminence is still in deep Samadhi , which on one level, amazes all, and on another level - would you expect anything else from such an amazing being who has radiated such wisdom and compassion to all???

Many special pujas are happening non-stop at the retreat centre where His Eminence passed and also at Jamchen Lhakhang (the main monastery at Boudanath stupa).

At the retreat centre there is a group of Lamas doing Vajrayogini Drub Choe, and at Jamchen Lhakang there are several groups offering prayers: Mahakala Puja, Vairochana ritual, Guru Yoga and Hevajra Drub Choe.

On behalf of the centres in Australia and all the Australian sangha we made offerings to monks on the day of the full moon at each of the pujas at Jamchen Lhakang.  We were also able to make an offering towards the funeral in March.

More details to come (including a transcription of an audience with the Most Venerable Khanpo Appey)...

Monday 22 January

It is with heart of sadness I have to inform you of the passing away of His Eminence Chogye Trichen Rinpoche at his new residence outside Kathmandu last night Sunday 21 January) at 11pm Nepalese time. After a brief complication with his feeling of an uncomfortable lump in his throat Rinpoche peacefully passed away. All the monasteries have been informed to engage in as many prayers as possible.

I have called a prayer gathering tonight (Monday 22 January) at our centre in Canberra 9.00pm and I urge all other centres and disciples to do likewise for the next few weeks. A date of funeral is yet to be announced and situations permitting it would be good for devotees to attend. You will all be kept informed of any develoment. Both His Holiness Sakya Trizin and His Eminence Luding Khen Rinpoche are expected to go to Nepal soon to assist and guide with all the necessary arrangements.

The best practice is to do Guru Yoga prayers from the Ngondro manual as well as Confession Sutras (download) and Samantabhadra's prayer  (download in Tibetan or English) with lamp offering.  A Prayer vigil will be arrnaged soon and will be notified how best to take part in at local centres.

Rinpoche's Words of Wisdom

Evatt, Monday 22 January

Sachen Kunga Nyingpo was given the teachings by Shangton Choebar but instructed that he should practice secretly and not share them with anyone for 18 years.  Shangton Choebar passed away.  Sachen Kunga Ningpo became very sick and was so severely ill he was unable to practice and on recovery found that he had forgotten the practice.

But he hadn’t forgotten the Guru Yoga which he took up with great fervour.  In Vajrayana Buddhism Guru Yoga is the most important practice, in the Bodhisattva vehicle, Bodhicitta is the most important practice and in the Vinaya renunciation is the most important practice.

After intense practice Sachen Kunga Nyingpo saw Shangton Choebar in his dream but there was no acknowledgement or teaching whatsoever.  However he was so convinced that his practice was working that he continued with the Guru Yoga yet more fervently.  A while later, again he saw Shangton Choebar and this time received the empowerment, blessings and teachings.  He then completely resumed his original practice.  With confidence in his Guru Yoga his dreams got clearer and clearer and then one night he dreamt of Virupa and two of his disciples and received the three month Lamdre empowerment and teachings.  (So even though he had never met Virupa the Guru Yoga was strong enough to have such a result).

Of course the presence of our teacher is very nice but our practice can be just as strong in his absence.  Some people feel they should look for another guru after the passing away of their Lama but this is misunderstanding the karmic connection.  There is no need to look for another guru if you truly understand the connection.  One just needs to do one’s practice.

So with great thanks I accept your condolences and offerings on behalf of the monks of Nalenda (who have not seen His Eminence for 48 years) and Jamchen Lhakhang Monasteries.  Evatt will be open for your prayers and practices this week and next week I will be off to Kathmandu for the funeral.

I feel now is the right time to build a stupa in memory of His Eminence Choegye Trichen Rinpoche and I will ask His Holiness Sakya Trichen for instructions as to how to go about this and where it should be built.  For a number of years we have been talking about building a stupa but now I am sure the time is right.  I will need your help in fundraising, designing, organising and I will need your generosity of time and funds.

This year I will go to Nalenda on my pilgrimage to Tibet to revive the morale of the monastery.

We feel sad to have lost our great teacher but for us to have recognised him as a great teacher he must have impressed us with his teachings.  So now we must practice before it is too late.  One day we too will drop dead and will we be a great master?

I knew His Eminence would pass away this year and while he was here I asked the Shabdrungs to let me know the moment they knew he was passing away.  They were shocked.  But I knew Rinpoche came here to bless us all and our efforts in organising this great community.  We must maintain this strong karmic bond for the benefit of all beings and to fulfil Rinpoche’s wishes.

I know we often feel we lack the time – we are too busy to come together and sit together but we must make this effort otherwise we will distance ourselves and get distracted and forget the practices, teachings and sadhanas.  So sad when we remember what we have had.  When we meet regularly and do the practices it delights the minds of the Enlightened Ones.  Our best offering is our practice.

His Eminence was greatly moved by the devotion of our Sangha members.  None of any of our efforts would have happened had it not been for his practice.

His Eminence is a beam of light that will forever shine.  I am just one of the tips of one of the rays.

The Benefits of Building a Stupa

Poems and Prayers and emails

Dear Lama Choedak Rinpoche

I am heartbroken to hear of your precious guru's passing.
I offer my greatest respects to you and your sangha.
May His Eminence attain great bliss in the dharmadhatu, but quickly return to help countless sentient beings.

Compassionately Delany (Cape Town, South Africa)

Dear Everyone

Sylvia Johnson sent me an email announcing that His Eminence has passed into the Clear Light.  After ringing a few key people, I started my practice last night at 9pm to link in with the timing of the Canberra puja for His Eminence.  During my daily practice yesterday morning I actually stopped and thought about Guru Rinpoche and what it meant to me to have Him as a teacher.  In fact, on Sunday night I had asked myself "I wonder when His Eminence will pass away?" and then thghouht nothing more about it.  Last night there was a gentle rain falling in Armidale which started around about 6pm I think.  My 2007 Prison Liberation Calender marks Monday 22 January as a favourable day.  Certainly, it is a blessing for all of us to have made a connection with  His Eminence.  Thank you to you one and all for the pivotal role you each played in bringing His Eminence to Australia last year.  Now at the time of His passing, His Eminence is bringing us all together  again for his final teaching to us in this life.

May we continue to try and be worthy students.  Yours in the Dharma.
And with much love.

Emilia

To Lama Choedak Rinpoche

Precious Rinpoche, I was very sad to hear of the passing of His Emminence Chogye Trichen Rinpoche, the world and all sentient beings have lost a wonderful teacher and friend. I regard my meeting His Emminence as the most special times of my life and will pray for him. On Monday night I did the King Of Prayers and Medecine Buddha. I will now do the practices you have suggested as I hold a fervent wish that His Emminence is still in mediation and will feel our love for him.

My thoughts are with you at this very sad time much love

Dear Lama Choedak Rinpoche

With heart felt sadness we offer to you our aroha at this time.  We feel so privileged that His Eminence visited New Zealand in 2001.  We felt at the time it was very rare and auspicious.  Somehow with his passing it has made it even more special.  Phuntsok Choeling Hawkes Bay Buddhist Centre started by His Eminence with the name being given.

We are all hugely grateful for His Eminences blessings.  His dedication to the Buddha/Dharma is truly inspirational.  His devotion to his students so beautiful.  His practice unsurpassable.  His knowledge of the Buddha/Dharma vast as the ocean.  We are all so blessed.

Many prayers are being said for him both individually and collectively whenever possible.

May through our bowing, offering, confessing, rejoicing, requesting, dedicating, our collective efforts be dedicated for the benefit of all beings and may His Eminence return, without delay, to this world to continue to help all who suffer.

In Dharma

Dear Rinpoche & dear Sangha,

I've been thinking about you all often and the effect of His Eminence's passing on the Sangha throughout the world and especially in Tibet at this time. May they know that our prayers are with them and for them too especially at this time of losing their dear, dear Rinpoche.   I am so very happy that a stupa is planned for our dear Eminence as a lasting visual tribute to the wonder of his amazing 'Being'. It will be a tangible place of connection to him and build on our prayers to him and for him & all sentient beings.   We may have lost his physical presence but he remains close & with us for certain. It will be an extremely special place of pilgrimage too, and I can't think of any better offering to our blessed great teacher. Please let me know ways in which I can help it materialise as the vision unfolds I look forward to being involved .     May the Triple Gem bless you continually for all times!! Love to all, Marg.

You are my sole refuge

Unmistakable guide

You show me the way to Dharma

From wisdom you abide

From your body come the warriors who are unbiased in great love

the tears they cry are for all

You my Guru, words beyond words, blessings beyond blessings

capturing perfection in my mind

You my sentinel in the forest of suffering

never let me fall from your holy sight

Although I know little of wisdom and compassion and the fusion of the two

I know it is through your understanding that I can abide

I take refuge

I take solace

with all beings at my side

in the light of your radiance we bow

forever may you think of us

one whose kindness touches all

showing us the way - the path

the love without limit

Jamchen, Maitreya

you have shown us all
