A son of trader, Milarepa used black magic and sorcery to kill his uncle and aunt in revenge along with thirty five people, by causing a violent hailstorm. Earlier his uncle and aunt had betrayed him and his mother by swindling their field and wealth, which his late father had left for them.
Realising what he had done, Milarepa was driven mad by his guilt and sought spiritual guidance.
After he met his teacher, the hard master Marpa, Milarepa went through a challenging spiritual journey and eventually became the most famous Yogi of Tibet.
His spiritual experience and enlightenment led him to sing about his spontaneous realisation. The Hundred Thousand Songs Of Milarepa are a compilation of Milarepa’s famous songs, filled with wisdom teachings that came from his ascetic life. Most early Western practitioners were inspired to learn Tibetan Buddhism after reading these songs.
In this workshop, Lama Choedak Rinpoche will select, sing some of Milarepa’s songs and explain their significance.
